Social Bookmarking

So today I decided to finally install a to this blog. I’d highly recommend doing this for friends and clients as it’s just another way to grow your blog’s traffic. Add some quality content that’s bookmark-worthy and you’re on your way.

Speaking of social bookmarking, I was doing some news digging and found that apparently google announced they were going to get in the game as these things have been growing like wildfire.

Google will extend its vertical search, social bookmarking, and desktop searching capabilities with new and improved products it announced yesterday.

Desktop searching has been a hot area for the past several years, as people have found desktop search tools useful for indexing and retrieving information on their hard drives. Meanwhile, social bookmarking services such as Yahoo’s Del.icio.us have become popular because they let users save links to Web sites they find useful, annotate the links, and share them with others. Finally, vertical search is another emerging area, because it lets users look for Web pages about specific topics and thus obtain a narrower set of results.

New Yahoo Design

Well I guess it’s finally hit me. Yahoo’s new design on the front page is showing up live on my interweb. My father sent me some screen captures from his computer at work several weeks ago and I thought it was ’so so’ then and today seeing it live I feel the same.

What don’t I like about it? Well first off I don’t like change unless it comes to menu items and women. (Just kidding honey!) Secondly, it seems to have lost that Yahoo feel. I miss the simple but very ‘yahooish’ buttons uptop that I’ve grown used to seeing over the past decade. Moving the menu to the left is fine I guess. Give me a few months and I might like this new setup.

Oh one other thing that irked me was that they moved where the news box was and replaced that section with ads. I know that’s a little thing but one of the reasons I like yahoo other than for search and email is I usually take a quick peek at their news box daily. Now I have to drag my lazy eyes over to the middle of the page. Boooooooooooooo.

If you’re not seeing this yet here’s a thumbnail (click for the big version) of the new design on yahoo. Enjoy…or not.

Foreign Language Internet Marketing

Thanks to Howie, a very cool Internet Marketer that I’ve recently been doing a bit of work for, for the inspiration to do this post.

During an email session of show and tell on some foriegn language marketing issues, I recalled having a few different pieces of code that would assist someone in maximizing their traffic.

There are two styles presented below. One is the .htaccess code to do the browser language redirects, and the other is simply php code you can insert on your page above the tag to get the same result.

The .htaccess / mod_rewrite version:

Save the Internet

I’ve taken a few months away from the thought of developing this blog as I had to wrap up a sale of a domain for a rather nice figure, have about half a dozen projects in the water, etc…

Sounds like a lot of excuses? You’re right, it is just that. I do more typing and communicating via email, phone and IM than I’ve ever done in the past and I love it. So I figured, hey I’m a glutten for punishment, why not get back onto this blog and start cranking.

Today’s post is dedicated to something I recently read at SaveTheInternet.com that I thought is clearly worth talking about. I’ve chatted a bit about it on the front of the site so I won’t repeat it verbatim. The bottom line is that there are some lobbiests in congress that want to control what you see on the Internet.
