Domaining Still a Boom

I was reading one of my favorite domainer blogs today (Frank Schilling’s - 7 Mile) and thought I’d pass along a quote I am totally ‘feeling’ these days when talking to clients:

In life, attitude is altitude. When most people don’t understand the usefulness of domain names and half the population doesn’t use the Internet, there is still a great deal of untapped opportunity for you to make your mark, but you’ve “gotta wanna”. Find a good name, create a rudimentary site and repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.. Buy low sell high and repeat, repeat, repeat.. Find your sweet spot add value for an existing player and repeat, repeat, repeat. The world is your oyster.”

Domain Registrars - namecheap

The other day I made mention of the domain registrar namecheap.com and that I suspected them of having a practice of quickly snapping domains into their system upon expiration. I recently received an email that cleared a few things up…and what I suspected originally, seems not to be the case these days.

Here are some screen caps on how to recover your domain in namecheap’s system if one of yours passes the expiration date. You still have “up to 29 days after expiration to renew at our regular pricing.” which comes directly from their CEO.

Once you log in, click on the ‘Reactivate Domains’ link:

reactivate at namecheap

Then click the checkbox for the domain or domains you need to renew, add to cart, and proceed through the checkout. That’s it…

Upcoming Domain Auctions by Moniker.com

There are two upcoming domain auctions that will be put on by Moniker that I thought will be interesting to watch. I’ve submitted one of my old gaming domains for possibly entry into the one in Amsterdam but I’m not holding my breath. After having spoke to my account rep, apparently there is a very very very small % of domains that are submitted for entry that make the final cut. The domain I submitted, although imo a great domain for the market, may not make the cut. If it does I’ll be sure to post about it again…hell if it doesn’t make the cut I’m sure I’ll post about it as well. ;)

Here are the 2 upcoming domain auctions:

Casino Affiliate Convention
Theme: Casino & Gaming
Venue: Silent Auction Only
May 3-5 * Amsterdam

Note: Submissions for this auction have closed.

Digging the Domain Business

So it’s Friday and I felt like posting something interesting on the Domain biz, so while wandering around the internets I found a pretty good read over at Rick’s Blog on big companies that are ‘getting it.’ His rant was generally how significant it is for companies to own their relevant web properties. Here’s a short list of who’s he mentions is getting it:

“Bank of America owns Loans.com. THEY GET IT!
Barnes and Noble own Books.com. THEY GET IT!
Kraft owns CreamCheese.com. THEY GET IT!
JC Penny owns Gift.com. THEY GET IT!
Calvin Klein owns Underwear.com. THEY GET IT!”

Transfering domains from registrar to registrar

How much of a painful, tedious process am I in the mood for?

This is what you need to ask yourself when thinking of doing this!

I am managing a portfolio of roughly 2000 domains for a client (sales & some assistance in development), that is also wanting them all moved into their godaddy account as they are come up for renewal.  During the process of setting up the instructions for another guy on the team to process, the following are the ‘must know’ issues I had to jot down.

In order to transfer your domain from one registrar:

1) You must ‘unlock’ the domain at it’s current registrar.

2) You must ensure that any whois privacy is turned off.

and

3) It must have been possessed within the current registrar for 60 days or more.

Now, for moving them to godaddy you’ll simply move through the transfer actions that are easily found on the front page.  After that, an email will come to the “Admin contact” of your domain.  In this email you’ll receive two pieces of information that you’ll need to take with you inside of the manage domains panel in godaddy.

Another thing you must do, is make sure your Admin Contact email is reachable.  We have some issues as most of this portfolio was picked up in auctions on the after market and thus the Admin Contact email is admin@snapnames.com.  This is problematic and has to be changed.

>>>> NOTE:  It’s vital to understand that if you change ANYTHING OTHER than the “Admin Contact” email, your current registrar will have to hold the domain for another 60 days before being able to release it.  Make sure that you ONLY change the Admin Contact email and none of the others.

One last thing — Don’t even bother trying to transfer domains to a new registrar if they are due to expire with in 2 week range, as the current registrar has 5-7 days to complete your request of release.  Give yourself time to track and followup on all the required actions to make this happen.

Hope you found this post useful.

The price of .com and .net domains going up…

Apparently Verisign has decided it’s time to juice more profits out of the domain industry by scheduling a price increase on .com  and .net domains.

You can read more about it at Frank Schilling’s blog.

Whoa LTNS and Rick Schwartz

Ok, first off, I’m sure myself and a load of other bloggers have said “oh it’s been so long, I promise to be good and start blogging more often…”

Whatever.

I was thinking of starting it off like that but I’ll refrain.

How about, I’m going to try to post more useful information here….more often. Ok

Now, what did I stumble on today that I thought might be useful and interesting to anyone that finds this blog?

Well hopefully if you’ve found this blog you’re also interested in domains and other interweb stuff like myself.

Today’s discovery was that THE granddaddy of DomainersRick Schwartz started a blog. I’ll definitely check in there from time to time as the man is a visionary in my books (As an added bonus I hear he’s quite a character. That’s perfect, I like people with chA-rASMA).

Shameless plug re: domaining

I’ll be putting out a narrative on how my old man and I sold a domain about a year ago (and a few in between) in the not to distant future.
