Transfering domains from registrar to registrar

How much of a painful, tedious process am I in the mood for?

This is what you need to ask yourself when thinking of doing this!

I am managing a portfolio of roughly 2000 domains for a client (sales & some assistance in development), that is also wanting them all moved into their godaddy account as they are come up for renewal.  During the process of setting up the instructions for another guy on the team to process, the following are the ‘must know’ issues I had to jot down.

In order to transfer your domain from one registrar:

1) You must ‘unlock’ the domain at it’s current registrar.

2) You must ensure that any whois privacy is turned off.

and

3) It must have been possessed within the current registrar for 60 days or more.

Now, for moving them to godaddy you’ll simply move through the transfer actions that are easily found on the front page.  After that, an email will come to the “Admin contact” of your domain.  In this email you’ll receive two pieces of information that you’ll need to take with you inside of the manage domains panel in godaddy.

Another thing you must do, is make sure your Admin Contact email is reachable.  We have some issues as most of this portfolio was picked up in auctions on the after market and thus the Admin Contact email is admin@snapnames.com.  This is problematic and has to be changed.

>>>> NOTE:  It’s vital to understand that if you change ANYTHING OTHER than the “Admin Contact” email, your current registrar will have to hold the domain for another 60 days before being able to release it.  Make sure that you ONLY change the Admin Contact email and none of the others.

One last thing — Don’t even bother trying to transfer domains to a new registrar if they are due to expire with in 2 week range, as the current registrar has 5-7 days to complete your request of release.  Give yourself time to track and followup on all the required actions to make this happen.

Hope you found this post useful.

Make your blog search engine friendly

Here’s a video by some SEO guy at wolf-howl.com — I think he loves a lot of people randomly blogging about SEO stuff so I figured I’d make sure to share this with the class.

Don’t Feed Google?

Interesting thought eh?

I ran across this article - Zell Wants End to Web’s Free Ride. Apparently Sam Zell (real estate mogul that recently bought the Tribune) posed the question(s):

“If all of the newspapers in America did not allow Google to steal their content, how profitable would Google be?” Zell said during the question period after his speech. “Not very.”

This could definitely put a damper on some of Google’s draw as one of the most popular useages of the Internet is to get news, check email, etc… It’s right up there.

And as far as how much it’s a player in the stack of Google services, well it’s right up there too.
top google services

Having major news outlets block Google’s ability to syndicate their data is a bit tricky though. Granted they have their own userbase but Google’s marketshare is nothing to sneeze at. One addage “givers gain” seems to apply here. Much like a bar that gives out free nuts to bring in customers, giving out pieces of data so that Google sends patrons their way seems mutually beneficial. Now ‘how’ beneficial can only truly be discovered through a study by cost analysis gurus — not just speculation buy some wealthy dude, no matter how mUch smarts him has.

The price of .com and .net domains going up…

Apparently Verisign has decided it’s time to juice more profits out of the domain industry by scheduling a price increase on .com  and .net domains.

You can read more about it at Frank Schilling’s blog.

Whoa LTNS and Rick Schwartz

Ok, first off, I’m sure myself and a load of other bloggers have said “oh it’s been so long, I promise to be good and start blogging more often…”

Whatever.

I was thinking of starting it off like that but I’ll refrain.

How about, I’m going to try to post more useful information here….more often. Ok

Now, what did I stumble on today that I thought might be useful and interesting to anyone that finds this blog?

Well hopefully if you’ve found this blog you’re also interested in domains and other interweb stuff like myself.

Today’s discovery was that THE granddaddy of DomainersRick Schwartz started a blog. I’ll definitely check in there from time to time as the man is a visionary in my books (As an added bonus I hear he’s quite a character. That’s perfect, I like people with chA-rASMA).

Shameless plug re: domaining

I’ll be putting out a narrative on how my old man and I sold a domain about a year ago (and a few in between) in the not to distant future.

Web 2.0, Halloween & Photo Mashups

A friend of mine shot me links to: & yesterday.

What exactly are they? They’re an example of these Web 2.0-ey mashups.

What the h*ll is that you ask?

Simply put, the mashup concept is a website/service that allows you to interact with existing content and create new ‘mashups’ from currently popular site(s) data & APIs (don’t ask me to explain much more or I’ll have to get uber-geek on you).

is a site that I am told will change thematically throughout the year and will allow for you to take flickr photos that you like and get shirts & other swag produced from them.

The few samples they have up now cover:

1) Google Logo Mashing
2) Hot Girls Mashing
3) Apple Logo Mashing

is another example of mashups meeting niche and seasonal themes.

I could easily picture other holiday and event mashups being created to allow you to find parties or events locally with the use of google maps & other data.

I’ll post more on mashups and Web 2.0-ey stuff as they’re often entertaining and VERY viral by nature.

Take care and have a great rest of the day!

How Often to Email Your Customers?

Well first off I have to say, and I’m sure I’ll hear a loud “HELL YES” in the background when I say this…

I Hate Spam.

hell yes beck

So, why am I asking this question? Well I have a small list of clients and customers now, but am focusing more on building my customer and client base in preparation for some upcoming product & services I’ll be offering.

While doing some research on the topic I went and signed up to several marketer’s lists. And what I can see, there are three main schools of thought being applied.

Legit Email Marketing

I’ve been doing a lot of work lately on building information products, services & scripts for myself, a few partners & clients. One of the major ingredients to doing well in any internet marketing scenario is getting people to email their list of customers about your product or service…or having a large list yourself.

With this in mind I’ve been doing a fair share of research on this topic lately and decided to finally pickup a course from a pretty well known, legit email marketer.

Admitedly, I know quite a bit about ‘non’ legit email marketing from the pre-CAN SPAM era while having many late night discussions with some associates that were involved in the dark side of spam. That being said, I’m more of a fan of legit email marketing as I knew it’d stand the test of time and am very interested in the current ‘best practices’ methods to do this type of highly effective marketing.

I will write up a thorough and honest review of this product once I’ve gone through the material.

While I’m waiting to get the course, I’ll be setting up a script I’ve known about for quite a while located at phplist.com. It’s free and from what I’ve heard from a few very trusted sources it’s a great script to run small lists with. There are several other free email list collection & mailing scripts to be found at hotscripts.com as well.

Anyways, thanks for stopping by and I’ll type at you later.

Matt Cutts tagged at Google Video

So, the other night I was surfing around Google Video looking at stuff on a topic I enjoy “domains.” Anyways, I stumble upon a video by Matt Cutts, and upon further inspection I see a tag for Gay Porn under his domain.

WHOA!

Ok, so I have heard that Matt’s a pretty nice guy, fun and all, but my curiousity is running now. Was that tag created by users messing with him, or has one of his counterparts at Google playing? :)

This also made me curious if someone could tag it with anything? ie; umpa lumpa love or some other nonsense…

Anyways, I thought this was definitely interesting and funny enough to share with the class. Enjoy this screen cap I caught just in case it gets fixed. Click on it to see the full version.

PS: Definitely go check out if you have any serious interest in SE marketing. He produced a good number of videos with some nice content on a variety of topics.
