Apparently I missed the Internet’s Birthday 2 days ago on August 6th. I stumbled upon this article just today and thought I’d share with the class.
On that day in 1991 some computer code was put on alt.hypertext discussion group so that others could download and play with it. After reading that I wondered if this was also the birthday of the opensource movement?
Anyways, I hope you enjoy the read.
*** Update: Apparently, as with trying to discern the actual date of Jesus’ birthday, so enters confusion to the exact date of the Internet’s birth. While doing some research on general industry background information on domain names, I stumbled upon this article at UCLA that dates the origins of the Internet back to 1969. I’d heard reference to ARPA net from programming classes back in the early 80s and while I was in the military but this is the first time I actually read specifically about the exact history and origin.
It’s another interesting read and also gives a clue to the origins of a fairly common greating amoungst techies “lo” .

Quick post for the day…
This video Just Like Emmalina is a perfect example of humor marketing and viral mareting with videos that are listed on one of the most popular video sharing sites - youtube.com.
If you haven’t investigated this field for marketing purposes you really need to catch up. This area is explosive to say the least. This topic will be returning to the blog at least a few times I’m sure.

So, this guy Shoemoney was up late using his friend’s “dirty perl script” as he referred to it, to send out emails letting people know that tonight’s show is going to be a discussion of marketing through forums and social networking sites.
Shoemoney’s Net Income show is definitely worth a listen and his blog is also completely bookmark-worthy. The Shoe has a nice combination of humor and giving up some free information, that quite frankly, I’m shocked he lets out of the bag at all.
It just so happens that I’ve been working on a list of social networking sites myself. My list is a work in progress as I’m going down it discovering which are best for different niche industry markets. I’ll be building a private list with notations for future use of my own and with clients. Hope this current list is of use to anyone that stops by.
Enjoy!

So, I was having a conversation with someone this evening about what else…making money and the internet. An example came up of some guy that makes a load of money on a gaming site and the statement was made “that lucky nerdy bastard!” While I can understand the sentiment, the first thing that came to mind, and fell out of my mouth, was something along the lines of ‘the main difference between him and others is sheer focus’.
While there may be a lot of very skilled and talented people in the world, not all of them find a way to materialize this into financial success. I’ve known several very wealthy people that don’t hold degrees or any highly technical knowledge but have amazing powers of focus and follow-through on projects and goals.
Of course this led to a discussion of how you need to ‘plan your work and work your plan’ and all that other fun cliche’ yack. Also it reminded me of this excerpt from the classic book “Think and Grow Rich” that I thought to be a pretty good guide or outline on how to keep and maintain focus on getting your goals materialized.
“Six Ways to Turn Desires into Gold.

Is there a connection?
Maybe, maybe not. The one string that ties Shoemoney, 666 and Fried Green al-Qaedas is that I felt like blogging on all three topics on this amazing spring day - Tuesday, June 6th, 2006.
Shoemoney has his debut radio show on an old friend of mine’s site; webmasterradio.fm. Daron & his wife Brandy own and run webmasterradio and the latest addition to their lineup is the Net Income show hosted by the one and only Shoemoney.
The connection to 666 is that it airs today at 3pm PST.
The Fried Green al-Qaedas connection is that I found that blog today and thought it has some pretty amusing posts and wanted to share with the class.
Have a great rest of the day! I’m off to go work up some Net Income myself.

Looks like Youtube has a humorous ‘down for maintenance or upgrades’ type of messages on thier website tonight. It’s drumming up a lot of “Youtube Got Hacked” threads on message boards, and across the interwebs.
If you don’t know who or what youtube is I’ll need to unearth your head from the sand. They’re one of the biggest, fastest growing traffic monsters online.
Anyways, I’ll get more into how to mess with them later on this blog. Right now it’s late but I just wanted to test something out and toss a post up.

So today I decided to finally install a social bookmarking plugin to this blog. I’d highly recommend doing this for friends and clients as it’s just another way to grow your blog’s traffic. Add some quality content that’s bookmark-worthy and you’re on your way.
Speaking of social bookmarking, I was doing some news digging and found that apparently google announced they were going to get in the game as these things have been growing like wildfire.
“Google will extend its vertical search, social bookmarking, and desktop searching capabilities with new and improved products it announced yesterday.
Desktop searching has been a hot area for the past several years, as people have found desktop search tools useful for indexing and retrieving information on their hard drives. Meanwhile, social bookmarking services such as Yahoo’s Del.icio.us have become popular because they let users save links to Web sites they find useful, annotate the links, and share them with others. Finally, vertical search is another emerging area, because it lets users look for Web pages about specific topics and thus obtain a narrower set of results.”

Well I guess it’s finally hit me. Yahoo’s new design on the front page is showing up live on my interweb. My father sent me some screen captures from his computer at work several weeks ago and I thought it was ’so so’ then and today seeing it live I feel the same.
What don’t I like about it? Well first off I don’t like change unless it comes to menu items and women. (Just kidding honey!) Secondly, it seems to have lost that Yahoo feel. I miss the simple but very ‘yahooish’ buttons uptop that I’ve grown used to seeing over the past decade. Moving the menu to the left is fine I guess. Give me a few months and I might like this new setup.
Oh one other thing that irked me was that they moved where the news box was and replaced that section with ads. I know that’s a little thing but one of the reasons I like yahoo other than for search and email is I usually take a quick peek at their news box daily. Now I have to drag my lazy eyes over to the middle of the page. Boooooooooooooo.
If you’re not seeing this yet here’s a thumbnail (click for the big version) of the new design on yahoo. Enjoy…or not.

Thanks to Howie, a very cool Internet Marketer that I’ve recently been doing a bit of work for, for the inspiration to do this post.
During an email session of show and tell on some foriegn language marketing issues, I recalled having a few different pieces of code that would assist someone in maximizing their traffic.
There are two styles presented below. One is the .htaccess code to do the browser language redirects, and the other is simply php code you can insert on your page above the tag to get the same result.
The .htaccess / mod_rewrite version:

I’ve taken a few months away from the thought of developing this blog as I had to wrap up a sale of a domain for a rather nice figure, have about half a dozen projects in the water, etc…
Sounds like a lot of excuses? You’re right, it is just that. I do more typing and communicating via email, phone and IM than I’ve ever done in the past and I love it. So I figured, hey I’m a glutten for punishment, why not get back onto this blog and start cranking.
Today’s post is dedicated to something I recently read at SaveTheInternet.com that I thought is clearly worth talking about. I’ve chatted a bit about it on the front of the site so I won’t repeat it verbatim. The bottom line is that there are some lobbiests in congress that want to control what you see on the Internet.
